What is a top coat for nails?

A top coat is a finishing nail polish applied as the final step of a manicure. Its role is to protect the nail color, smooth the nail surface, and enhance the overall finish. Depending on the formula, it can deliver a glossy gel-like, matte, or glitter effect. A top coat also helps extend the wear of your nail polish by reducing chips, scratches, and daily wear.

When should you apply a top coat?

A top coat should be applied after your nail polish, as the last step of your manicure. For regular nail polish, apply it once the color is fully dry to seal the finish and prevent smudging. For gel or gel nail polish, it is used after the color layer and cured under a UV or LED lamp, depending on the product instructions. Applying a top coat at the right time helps lock in the color, improve durability, and maintain a smooth, polished look. You can also reapply a thin layer after a few days to refresh shine and extend wear.

What’s the difference between a base coat and a top coat?

The difference between a base coat and a top coat lies in their function within a manicure routine. A base coat is applied before nail polish to protect the natural nail, prevent staining, and improve polish adhesion. A top coat is applied after nail polish to protect the color, extend wear, and add the desired finish. Both products are complementary: the base coat prepares the nail, while the top coat seals and enhances the manicure. Using both helps achieve a longer-lasting, smoother, and more professional result.

How to choose the right top coat for your manicure?

Choosing the right top coat depends on your manicure type and the finish you want. A glossy top coat is the most versatile option for a shiny, salon-like look. A matte top coat creates a soft, modern finish. If you use gel nail polish, opt for a UV or LED top coat to ensure proper curing and long-lasting results. Some formulas are designed to boost durability, speed up drying time, or create a gel-like effect. Selecting the right top coat allows you to customize your finish while improving the longevity of your manicure.
